Living in Europe gives you fantastic opportunities when it comes to taking a weekend away, thanks to an explosion of low cost airline companies and excellent train networks throughout Europe it has never been easier to hop around the continent. If you are looking to get away for a weekend in Europe this year then here are some of the best locations for you to visit.
Barcelona
The capital of Catalonia has long been a hot-spot for tourism thanks to it’s cosmopolitan life-style, it’s beautiful coastal location and it’s rich tapestry of art. Getting to Barcelona is both cheap and easy from almost all European destinations and there is more than enough for you to do on a weekend here. Barcelona has some of the finest art museums in Spain and the Picasso museum is one of my favourites. Perhaps if Barcelona football club are playing at home then you can go and see a game one of the most famous stadiums in the World, the Camp Nou. Alternatively you can simply roam the mazy streets and see what you can discover in the old town, or head to the stunning La Sagrada Familia cathedral to see Gaudi’s masterpiece taking shape. You can shop around for a discount holiday online and find some fantastic deals in Barcelona for you or you and your family to have a perfect weekend break.
Edinburgh
The ancient capital city of Scotland is one of the best places in Europe to take a weekend break, similar to Barcelona, Edinburgh has an international airport and is easily accessible from all major cities in the continent. There are really three sides to this city, firstly there is the ancient buildings, the traditional shops paying hommage to days gone by and of course the castle that looks over the entire city. Secondly the city has ultra modern parts filled with shops, trendy bars, michelin-starred restaurants and complexes with comedy clubs, bars and cinemas. Finally the city manages to give you a feeling of being in the countryside with it’s huge Carlton Hill that sits in the centre of the city, and it’s vast green areas near Holyrood and beyond which offer scenic walks and open spaces. Whatever you are after on your weekend away, Edinburgh will be the perfect location for you.
Berlin
The German capital has seen a dramatic change in the last 50 years, having recovered from devastating war-damage to being separated during the Cold War, Berlin has not only overcome these challenges, bit come out the other side with gusto. The city now is far more famous for it’s vibrant art scene, it’s lively, relentless night-life with an ‘anything goes’ attitude and for it’s odes to it’s tumultuous past. If you are into history then you can visit the Brandenburg Gate, the remnants of the Berlin Wall or the National History museum that is full of World War artefacts and incredible footage of those dark days. The art scene in the city can be witnessed all around, from the Boho bars to the street art and public exhibitions of music, poetry and spoken word. One of the best things about Berlin is that for a huge European city, it is incredibly cheap, especially compared to the likes of London, Paris and Milan. If you’ve never considered Berlin as a weekend getaway then now is the time to start, it is an excellent place to spend your time.
