Florida can be a tricky place to visit due the unbelievable number of things to do there. Florida is perfect for families and can be considered to be one of the best playgrounds in the World with it’s amusement parks, zoo’s and of course it’s glorious weather. Where do you start, well here are 5 of my favourite things to do in the ‘Sunshine State’
I should start here, no trip to Florida would be complete without a trip to the most famous theme park in the World. Disney World is in fact far more than just a theme park, it is where dreams come true, especially for the kids. Meet your favourite Disney characters, take in any one of the numerous live shows that take place across the park, watch the firework displays and of course, hit the rides. The park has golf courses, hotels, restaurants and houses the Animal Kingdom and Epcot theme park. Everyone will have fun here and I mean everyone.
Another theme park here and this one is primarily based on the film and television industry. The rides are film themed and it’s main attraction will change with the times, whether it is Harry Potter, ET or Indiana Jones, the mission of the park is to make you feel like you are a part of it. The complex features adventure islands which consists of 7 islands all with varying themes and this park will take at least an entire day to discover so bear that in mind before you go. One thing I should add about any of the theme parks is that it is far more cost effective to buy your Florida park tickets before you go, you are also guaranteed a ticket this way.
The grassy wetlands of the Everglades span an enormous 1.5 million acres and house a great array of wildlife, from panthers to alligators to turtles and make for a great adventurous day out. To truly take in the beautiful flora and fauna of the Everglades it is worth taking a tour in one of the airboats that are used to skim across both water and land in what is really an exhilarating experience in itself. If you are ‘theme parked out’ then the Everglades is a perfect way of seeing a different side to Florida.
Kennedy Space Center
Many of us dreamed of being an astronaut when we grew up but as expected by our parents, very and I mean very few of us would ever make the voyage into space. All is not lost as in Florida you can visit the Kennedy Space Centre, if you are lucky you may even see a launch take place. Either way the visitor centre is well worth a visit, see footage and artefacts from previous missions, learn about astronaut training programmes and space research and you can even have a go in a simulator to bring back that feeling from when you were young.
If you want an up close and personal view of some of the most beautiful marine life on the planet then head over to Sea World. The park offers dolphin shows, the famous killer whale show, interactive penguin displays, shark encounters and a stingray lagoon where you actually touch a stingray. Many of us will never get to see these animals in their natural habitat so Sea World makes that dream a reality, a must visit place.
